| The Mermaid Class this year celebrates its centenary having first been established in 1907 by members of the Sea View Yacht Club. The present Class, built to a design by the late Arthur Robb in cold moulded laminates of makore, has now largely been replaced by twelve GRP Mermaids. Some of the old Mermaids, however, remain in the Class and are very competitive.
Their distinctive individual colour schemes and matching spinnakers make them an interesting sight for spectators at Cowes who are easily able to spot the leaders or tail-enders amongst the fleet. The boats have a choice of sails, depending on the strength of wind each day.
As well as being raced at Cowes and off Seaview throughout the summer, the boats are available for charter to organisations holding their own regattas at Sea View Yacht Club. |
