Founded in 1826, Skandia Cowes Week has become the largest and most prestigious sailing regatta in the World. Some 1,000 boats, in 32 classes, now race in this, the world’s greatest sailing regatta, but until 2007 the class winners have never had an opportunity to race each other on a level playing field to identify the ultimate King of Cowes.
For the first time in 2007 the Laser SB3 Class, in association with Volkswagen Touareg and with the support of Cowes Combined Clubs and Skandia Cowes Week, has created a very special invitation only event to find the Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week.
The winners of each of the most competitive classes at Skandia Cowes Week 2006 was invited to compete for the title ‘Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes’ and the class winners came together racing identical one design Laser SB3’s off Cowes in a one-day, three race regatta where skill on the water rather than performance enhancing features, advantageous ratings or financial investment were tested to decide the winner.
After a stunning day of racing in perfect Solent conditions Alister Richardson of the Extreme 40 Class claimed the first Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes crown and drove away with the top prize of a brand new Volkswagen Touareg.
Following the success of the inaugural event LaserPerformance (Europe) Ltd and Volkswagen are delighted to announce that 2008 will see the return of the Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week. With the question being, who will be crowned King this year?
On Friday 1st August 2008 the class winners from Skandia Cowes week 2007 will race in identical Laser SB3s off Cowes in a one-day, three race regatta. Some 32 leading national and international helms will have the opportunity to pitch their skills on the water against each other, to compete for the coveted ‘Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes’ title.
