DARING CLASS WINNER GILES PECKHAM IS CROWNED VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG KING OF COWES 2008 AFTER SPECTACULAR DAY ON THE WATER

Giles Peckham - Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes

The 2008 Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week exploded into life today with three glorious races sailed in conditions ranging from eighteen up to twenty five knots. As the wind whistled around the Cowes Yacht Haven, there were lots of nervous faces amongst the twenty nine teams who gathered at eight o'clock this morning for the official briefing from race officer Tony Lovell. The racecourse was set in the lee of the land in Osborne Bay to provide the competitors with some shelter from the forecasted steadily increasing breeze and the fleets' sleigh ride journey down there gave several of the 2007 Cowes Week class winning helms their first true experience of the Laser SB3 downwind at speed.

Only One Week To Go Until The Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes At Skandia Cowes Week 2008

24 July 2008 - With just over a week to go before the first race of the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week, the activity levels of the participating teams are reaching fever pitch. Virtually all of the owner helm pairings have finalised their crew configurations and some have been able to get some practice time in on the Solent.

The King of Cowes event uniquely matches the winning helms of the major classes at the 2007 Skandia Cowes Week with a randomly drawn pool of experienced Laser SB3 owners, for a one off regatta to decide who will be crowned King of Cowes for 2008. Aside from the kudos of securing the overall title, the winning helm will be presented with the keys to a brand new Volkswagen Touareg car and the boat owner will be rewarded with a fantastic Mark Warner family sailing holiday.

Last year, TV sports presenter Gaby Logan was the lone celebrity competing amongst the experienced sailors. This year we have three household names getting their first exposure to the cut and thrust of one-design sportsboat racing. 110-metre hurdler Colin Jackson will be racing with Multihull Class winner Philip Cotton aboard Tim Cork's Bathstore.com. Colin Jackson is, without a doubt, one of the greatest athletes that Great Britain has ever produced. He called time on his outstanding athletics career in 2003, after more than a decade spent at the very pinnacle of his sport. Since then Jackson's role as a BBC sports pundit and presenter has made him a familiar face in living rooms across the UK.

Fellow athlete and triple jumper Jonathan Edwards rounded out a spectacular sporting career with a Gold Medal at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. Edwards made his last competitive appearance at the World Athletics Championships in Paris in 2003. Now also working for BBC Sport, he remains one of the best loved British athletes. For King of Cowes, Edwards has been paired with Simon Anink, winner of IRC Class 3, and will be sailing aboard the SB3 of Nick Jackson.

TV Presenter Kirsty Gallacher will be racing with Adam Gosling aboard the Navy's SB3 Sail Navy. Gosling earned his King of Cowes place by winning the IRC 7 Class. Gallacher began her TV career on Sky Sports and has gone onto to present Gladiators for Sky, Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway for ITV1, The National Lottery for BBC1 and The Games for Channel Four. Daughter of former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher she is also a keen sportswoman herself and is said to be looking forward to taking on the challenge of the King of Cowes regatta.

It is crystal clear that all three celebrities are fully focused on pulling off a King of Cowes victory. Experienced SB3 helm Jono Shelley, who ran an intensive day's training for the trio a few weeks ago, told us how struck he was with their enthusiasm. 'It was clear from the moment they arrived that they were hugely up for this. They are all fiercely competitive and when we went afloat the banter between the three of them started immediately. When we showed them a video of last year's regatta I think they were surprised at just how close the boats get to each other whilst racing'. Shelley was also impressed with how the three celebrities coped with being dropped into the alien environment of sailing a twenty-six foot sportsboat. 'When we took them out in the boats for the first time the conditions were pretty full on. The wind was blowing at around eighteen knots, so when they pulled up the gennakers for the first time they were straight off planning at full chat. We had a few broaches during the day but nobody seemed to be phased by it all'.

Kirsty, Colin and Jonathan are all said to be very fired up and looking forward immensely to competing for real. Kirsty in particular seems keen to maximise her chances on the big day and rumour has it that she will be joining Adam Gosling in Cowes for a practice session on the eve of the event. It seems unlikely that Adam and Kirsty will have the Solent to themselves for their training. Some of the other teams have been able to get in valuable sailing time together over the last couple of weekends but most seem to have earmarked the Thursday before the event for practice.

David Palmer, winner of the Dragon Class, told us that he and tactician Jamie Lea have not been able to sail together in an SB3 yet, but planned to launch in Hamble next Thursday morning in order to work out their crew manoeuvres on the sail over to Cowes. Whilst Palmer is no stranger to victory on the Solent, having won Cowes Week in the Swallow, Sigma 33 and Dragon classes, he claims not to have designs on the King of Cowes title. 'I am thrilled to be able to take part in an event like this and hugely looking forward to competing. However this is a young man's game and I am sixty seven so I think my reaction times will be a problem'.

For Alistair Evans, representing the IRC 5 Class aboard Pieter Hien's Go Hard or Go Home, the event will be tinged with sadness. Alistair's father, Harry Evans, sadly died of cancer just a few weeks ago. Harry was a hugely popular character and a legend in the yachting community. Over many years his series of racing yachts, all called Alvine, were a familiar sight at the UK's major regattas. Just a week or so before he died, he told close friends how delighted he was that Alvine had earned the right to sail at King of Cowes and that he was very keen for Alistair to represent him there. Alistair and his crew Duncan McCarthy, who ran Alvine for Harry, will be racing in Harry's memory at the King of Cowes regatta and we are sure it will be an emotional day for all concerned.

Double Etchells World Champion, Simon Russell, secured his place at this year's King of Cowes by virtue of a win in the in the XOD Class. 'I am looking forward to competing' he told us. 'I don't entertain hopes of winning because I have so little experience in the SB3. I am sailing on Simon Lossie's boat Twerk and have recruited Richard Lovering to sail with us, so hopefully we will be able to set the boat up OK'. Russell played down his Solent experience as being of any advantage. 'It counts for nothing. All the skippers have won their class at Skandia Cowes Week and you don't do that without knowing your way around the Solent'.

Yachts and Yachting's online editor Mark Jardine is looking after one of the Laser Performance works boats and has Hayling Island's Ian Andrews on the helm. Ian won the RS Elite Class and says he is pleased to be part of King of Cowes but is concerned about his lack of time in an SB3. 'We are hoping to sail together the day before because our diaries have prevented us getting together sooner'. Jardine believes that the winner of the overall title will depend upon a number of factors. 'If it is windy then anyone with asymmetric experience will have a big advantage. The start lines are going to be crowded so it is vital to get away cleanly. If the wind is more moderate then local knowledge about sailing in the Solent will come into play'.

Giles Peckham, winner of the Daring Class, will be sailing with former Laser SB3 European Champion, Craig Burlton, who also competed in the 2007 King of Cowes event and testifies to its appeal. 'Last year there were some obvious candidates for the top slot and when you looked at the results afterwards, they had all done well. This year it's different. The field seems pretty open so it is very hard to predict a winner'. Craig believes that like any regatta, the key to success will be consistency. 'With only three races it is really about who makes the least mistakes. Getting off the start lines in good shape will be crucial'.

All the teams need to complete registration at Shepard's Wharf between 1700 and 2100 on Thursday 31st July. Final crew weighing will take place between 0800 and 0845 on Friday 1st August. The first race is scheduled to start at 1100 with races two and three being run back to back. The winners will be announced around 1730 at the Prizegiving Cocktail Party in the Cowes Yacht Haven.

Those not lucky enough to be in Cowes on the day will be able to follow all the action online. Traxu will be providing live position tracking for all the boats so you can watch the racing as it happens on your computer at
www.traxu.com. The Daily Sail Website will also be giving live updates from the racetrack via their King of Cowes Live Blog which can be accessed through www.kingofcowes.com

Teams Prepare To Go Head To Head For The Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes 2008

17 July 2008 - The announcement of the helm and owner pairings for the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week regatta on Friday 1 August, has provoked speculation, heated discussion and even argument amongst the UK's sailing community. Everyone has their favourites and their own opinion on who the 'dream teams' might turn out to be. One thing is clear however, predicting a winner at this early stage is simply impossible.

Just as last year, the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week will be an exciting, three race shoot out, sailed in Laser SB3's - the UK's most dynamic one design class. This unique event pits the major class winners at Skandia Cowes Week 2007 in a head to head battle for a chance to be crowned as 2008 King of Cowes and to pocket the keys to a shiny new Volkswagen Touareg into the bargain.

2007 Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week winner, Xtreme 40 Catamaran helmsman Alistair Richardson, had this to say about his experience: 'What an event! The concept is simple but brilliant - invite the winners, level the playing field and let battle commence. Despite the enormous logistics Volkswagen Touareg pulled it off with sheer class. The standard in 2008 looks to be extremely high as all the helms are already used to winning. Good luck to everyone who is competing.'

Following on from Gabby Logan's participation last time, to add to the excitement this year, there will be no less than three celebrities taking part in the racing. Kirsty Gallacher, Colin Jackson and Jonathan Edwards will be competing at their first ever competitive sailboat regatta. All three have recently taken part in an intensive one-day training session, courtesy of the LaserPerformance coaching team. Under the watchful tutorage of experienced SB3 helmsman Jono Shelley, of Team Touareg, the celebs were given a crash course on the theory of sportsboat racing followed by an action packed on the water session, where they were introduced to the concepts of tacking and gybing along with the pitfalls involved in hoisting and retrieving the SB3's huge gennaker. To round off their day, the celebrity yachties got a chance to put their newly acquired skills into practice, with a short windward leeward race. The coaches all commented on the high level of commitment and enthusiasm shown by the trio of the celebrities. Colin Jackson, in particular, showed considerable aptitude during spinnaker hoists - powering the sail to the top of the mast quicker than some seasoned professionals. All three are said to be looking forward to getting to know their teams and for the chance to compete for real on the day.

Unfortunately, Glenn Bourke, who won the Laser SB3 Class at Skandia Cowes Week last year, will not be able to compete at Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week this time, but sends his best wishes to all the competitors. 'I am extremely sad that pressure of work means I will not now be able to take part in this year's Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week.  Last year's event was fantastic fun and I was very much looking forward to competing again, but I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the competitors good luck for what I am sure will be another great day.'

Since the pairings announcement, most owner/helm combinations have been in close contact, formulating potential strategies and discussing their training plans. None more so than legendary one design sailor Geoff Carveth, paired with Cork 1720 class winner Mark Greenway. Carveth who has both National and European and Laser SB3 titles under his belt is clearly delighted with his allocation 'When I first looked at the list of potential helms, Mark was one of the ones I thought would be great to race with. His 1720 background gives him vital asymmetric experience and I know he has sailed SB3's before. Also his weight means that we should be able to sail with four people rather than three, which will help too'. Renowned for his meticulous preparation, Carveth is clearly focused on giving his helm the best possible chance of winning.

'This is serious stuff and I am preparing in the same way as if I was going to be helming' he said. 'We will get as much sailing in as we can over the next couple of weekends and will launch the boat early on Thursday to do some final practicing over in Cowes'. Commenting on the high level of competitors at this year's event he went on to say 'Quite a few people are here for the second time so will know better what to expect. The helms are all experienced racers used to winning so it is going to be intense on the water.' Who did he see as the main contenders for the 2008 title? 'There are lots of teams on the list capable of putting together a regatta winning series. If I had to single out one I would say Fumesy (Simon Russell) representing the XOD Class should be competitive. He has lots of small keelboat experience and he knows his way around the waters off Cowes too.'

The draw has thrown up some other interesting owner/helm pairings combinations. Chris Sherlock, skipper of the monster sized super maxi Ocean Leopard, who won Class Zero at Skandia Cowes Week in 2007, will have challenges of a significantly different scale to get to grips with when racing a twenty six foot laser SB3. Sherlock will be sailing on David Atkinson's Liftingsafety.co.uk boat.

Richard Talbot, victorious in the RS K6 class at last year's Skandia Cowes Week, will be steering Ian Southworth and Nigel Smith's Chilli Chaser. Southworth has multiple dinghy titles and a J24 European Championship victory to his name and is renowned for his ability to get the most out of whichever boat he sails.  Combining this with Talbot's proven asymmetric and sportsboat experience puts this team squarely on the list of potential winners.

Another team to watch will be 2007 Victory Class winner John Tremlett sailing on Guy Jackson's Helly Hansen. Jackson, who is studying yacht design at Southampton University, told us that before the event he hoped to get at least four full days of training with his guest helmsman. 'Introducing a new driver into the team can potentially change everything so it is vital that we give ourselves as much time as possible to get used to sailing together.' Commenting on his allocated helm he had this to say 'We are delighted to have got someone like John. As well as the Victory sailing he also has a very competitive background in Finns and has been putting in some RS400 hours to sharpen up his asymmetric sailing'.

Daniel Geoghegan also believes he is on to a good thing with his allocated helmsman, Tim Spalding, the owner of last year's IRC 4 Class winner Amey Love Shack. 'Tim is very experienced and competitive so I think we will be in good shape on the day. The important thing is to be able to get off the line cleanly and with a helm like Tim we should be fine' he commented.

In subsequent press releases, as the anticipation builds towards what promises to be another exciting Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week, we will be updating you on the progress of the three celebrity sailors as well as bringing you the stories behind some of the other teams challenging for the coveted 'King of Cowes' title along with the chance to drive away in a brand new Volkswagen Touareg.

Kirsty Gallacher, Jonathan Edwards and Colin Jackson Prepare For The Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes 2008

10 July 2008 - Television sports personality Kirsty Gallacher and former GB Olympic athletes Colin Jackson and Jonathan Edwards will compete in The Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes event at this year's Skandia Cowes Week.  The inclusion of this trio of aspiring sailors creates a unique race within a race which seeks to find the 'champion of champions' at Cowes.

Sailors from 30 different classes who competed in last year's regatta will take part in The Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week regatta on Friday 1st August.  Kirsty, Colin and Jonathan will each crew one of the identical 20ft Laser SB3s racing in the Solent.  All crews involved in the race must be skippered by a class winner from Skandia Cowes Week 2007 who will compete on a level playing field to find the best sailor at Skandia Cowes Week.

Kirsty, Colin and Jonathan have recently been in training and competed against each other at an intensive sailing day at Datchet Water.  On this occasion Kirsty finished in first place with Jonathan finishing second and Colin coming home in third.

TV presenter Kirsty Gallacher commented: 'I am really excited to be taking part in The Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes.  Coming from a sporting background, I love the buzz of competition.  I've heard some good things about last year's event and know that Gabby Logan took part and enjoyed some success finishing in 5th place (in the Team Touareg crew).  It will be a real challenge and I think it is fantastic this race has been established to create a level playing field and find the champion of champions at Cowes Week.'

Former 110 metre hurdle world-record holder Colin Jackson stated: 'I haven't done too much sailing so the Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes will be new territory for me but the competitive drive never goes away.  I'll be aiming to do as good a job as possible for my crew so will be working hard in training.  I'll also have an extra incentive to do well as I'm up against my former Great Britain Olympic team mate Jonathan Edwards.  It will be good to get a friendly rivalry going between us...especially in Olympic year.'

Olympic Gold medallist Jonathan Edwards said: 'I am really looking forward to competing in the Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes.  I'll be trying to get my sailing knowledge and skills up to scratch as quickly as possible as I don't want Colin Jackson to finish ahead of me!  It will be fun having a race within a race between Colin, Kirsty and me however the most important thing is that we all support our crews as best we can.'

Sally Chapman, Volkswagen Communications Manager, added: 'It's great to have Kirsty, Colin and Jonathan involved in the competition.  Volkswagen has supported the Laser SB3 class for the past five years and we'll be looking to make the Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes even more of a success than last year.'

The Volkswagen Touareg luxury 4x4 is the official vehicle sponsor of Skandia Cowes Week 2008.  The impressive capabilities of the Volkswagen Touareg make this an ideal partnership. It can tow loads of up to 3.5 tonnes and is able to send power to the wheels that need it most to help up tricky slipways.  It will also happily wade into water up to half a metre deep, or even more with the optional air suspension, which makes launching and recovery of a boat simple and safe.

Follow the progress of Jonathan, Kirsty and Colin on the official Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes website www.kingofcowes.com, or for further details on the complete Volkswagen Touareg range visit www.volkswagen.co.uk/touareg

The pairings are in for the Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week 2008 - so who are you backing?

19 June 2008 - Friday 13th June, saw the 32 class winners from Skandia Cowes Week 2007; being drawn at random along with the Laser SB3 owners, to set the pairings in preparation for the big day, Friday 1st August, that will determine which Skandia Cowes Week class winning helm will be crowned Volkswagen Touareg King of Cowes, 2008.

Thirty three helmsmen were invited, with an impressive 32 confirming their attendance.

With 32 Skandia Cowes Week class winners from 07 present, there were some big names, such as Graham Bailey (Etchells), Glenn Bourke (Laser SB3), Simon Russell (XOD) and Adam Gosling (IRC 7), and the random draw had everyone on the edge of their seats.

LaserPerformance Europe Ltd and Volkswagen Touareg teamed up in 2007 to hold the inaugural Volkswagen Touareg King Of Cowes at Skandia Cowes Week, with Alistair Richardson walking away with the title and a brand new Volkswagen Touareg.  The excitement surrounding this invitation-only sailing event is building fast, with some big prizes and pride at stake!

The draw took place at Volkswagen Headquarters, Milton Keynes, and was carried out by Heather Sage, Events Manger, Volkswagen UK and Sally Chapman, Communications Manager, Volkswagen UK.
